多年生半常綠纏繞灌木。小枝細長，中空，籐為褐色至赤褐色。

金銀花源起於一對姊妹，相傳從前一個農家生了一對孖女，分別取名為金花、銀花，她們十分善良可愛，可惜一天長大後的金花突然得了熱性傳染病，銀花不聽醫師勸告，日夜守護著姊姊致受感染。不幸地，兩姊妹的病情惡化，她們死後的第二年春天，墓上長出一種前所未見的花朵，能治熱性傳染病，人們為了紀念這雙姊妹，遂命名為金銀花。
