Exploring Evolutionary History of Our Earth Space Seed Nursery

Our School has successfully cultivated the 3rd generation of space-exposed cowpea plants to the 5th generation with the greatest endeavor since our participation in Space-Exposed Seed Nursery Project launched by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and UNESCO (HK) in April 2015. It is our greatest honour to represent Hong Kong to share how CFSS advocates biodiversity, sustainability and Popular Science on campus and to the community through the Project. In the Space Seed Conference in Tengchong, Space Seed Exchange Programme was launched among 21…

Fossils under Scanning Electron Microscope

Image of pollen grains taken on an SEM shows the characteristic depth of field of SEM micrographs A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is a type of electron microscope that produces images of a sample by scanning the surface with a focused beam of electrons. The electrons interact with atoms in the sample, producing various signals that contain information about the surface topography and composition of the sample. The electron beam is scanned in a raster scan pattern, and the position of the beam is combined…

Mutation and Evolution

In biology, a mutation is the permanent alteration of the nucleotide sequence of the genome of an organism, virus, or extrachromosomal DNA or other genetic elements. Accumulated mutations can cause cancer development. In our school’s Cell Biotechnology Research Centre, students can make good use of human leukemia cells HL-60 for their scientific research. Some students have investigated the anti-cancer properties of potato and grape samples by performing viable cell count and metabolic studies.

Exploring Evolutionary History of Our Earth

With resource exploitation, habitat destruction and devastating pollution problems, some scientists predict that humans are driving themselves towards the Sixth Mass Extinction. Global warming, drastic climate change, coral bleaching and so on hoist alarming signals of the Globe that our next generations will suffer most. We aim to educate our students to explore biodiversity in boundless classrooms with global perspectives on environmental issues, such that they are conscious of and able to taking further steps to alleviate the aggravating situations in the future. CFSS is…

The Origin of Species: Charles Darwin & Russel Wallace

Darwin and Wallace develop similar theory Darwin began formulating his theory of natural selection in the late 1830s but he went on working quietly on it for twenty years. He wanted to amass a wealth of evidence before publicly presenting his idea. During those years he corresponded briefly with Wallace, who was exploring the wildlife of South America and Asia. Wallace supplied Darwin with birds for his studies and decided to seek Darwin’s help in publishing his own ideas on evolution. He sent Darwin his…
