Cordierite Hornfels does not have a specific chemical or mineralogical composition. Quartz , feldspar , garnet, and calcite are the common parent rocks of Cordierite Hornfels.

堇青石角頁岩是由接觸變質形成。接觸變質即是大量岩漿侵入原有的石頭( 無論是流進夾縫還是碰到火成岩 )，令鄰近的石頭暫時變得柔軟，重新凝固為不同的石頭 堇青石角頁岩。

Cordierite Hornfels is formed by contact metamorphism . Contact metamorphism occurs when a mass of hot magma intrudes into preexisting rock , whether by injecting itself into a crack or by ascending in a large body (e.g., pluton ). Rock in close proximity to the magma is temporarily softened or melted and recrystallizes with an altered texture, producing a hornfels.

Cordierite Hornfels are found in areas where the magma of the Earth’s center once broke through the crust, providing the necessary heat and pressure that presses the various types of rock together to create them. It can be found in many places throughout the world. They can be found in abundance in Mexico, Australia, Europe, South America and the western United States. Anywhere that the requisite conditions of high temperature and low pressure existed at some point in the past can be a likely source of Hornfels.
