Code: ML226

Name   Tanzanite
Ca2Al3(SiO4)(Si2O7)O(OH)Chemical Formula   Ca2Al3(SiO4)(Si2O7)O(OH)
6 – 6.5Mohs scale of Hardness   6 – 6.5
Description   Found in just one place on earth, tanzanite is a relatively recent discovery which is in December. Tanzanite is as hard as opal. Tanzanite is the blue and violet variety of the mineral zoisite, caused by small amounts of vanadium. Tanzanite belongs to the epidote mineral group. Tanzanite is only found in Tanzania, in a very small mining area near the Mererani Hills. It belongs to the Orthorhombic crystal system.
Challenge Is Tanzanite rarer than diamonds? According to a Tanzanian geologist, the circumstances that led to its formation 585 million years ago were so exceptional that the likelihood of finding tanzanite anywhere else on earth is one in a million, making it a thousand times rarer than diamonds.
